North Cyprus A Corner of Earth Touched by Heaven

Bellapais Abbey in North Cyprus

Bellapais Abbey

North Cyprus Bellapais Abbey was founded as an Augustinian Monastery in the reign of Hugh (1324-1358). The charming site was chosen for its location, on one of the spurs of the Kyrenia mountains and is very attractive for tourists during their holidays in North Cyprus. It has also been called the Abbey de la Paix (the Abbey of Peace), and the Abbey Blanche because of white habits worn by monks. Surrounded by foliage on all sides, it has most spectacular views over land and sea.

Kyrenia Castle North Cyprus

Kyrenia Castle, North Cyprus

Its great attraction as a centre for visitors lies not only in the ancient villages, castles and monasteries which are to be found in the neighbourhood of the castle, it is among a scenery of beauty unmatched throughout the length and breadth of the Cyprus Island. A variety of cafes, discos, bars, restaurants and casinos are to be found.

Kyrenia Castle

Nobody has been able to establish the exact date of the construction of the Kyrenia Castle, one of the most beautiful historical monuments of Northern Cyprus. As a result of excavations at Kyrenia Castle, it is thought that the original castle was built in the 9th century AD by the Byzantines to defend Kyrenia against Arabic raids and was one of the nine original Kingdoms of Cyprus.

Later additions were made by the Lusignagns and the Kyrenia Castle was further strengthened by the Venetians. An interesting fact about the Kyrenia Castle, frequently visited on North Cyprus holidays, is that in all its history the castle was never taken by assault.

North Cyprus

Cyprus is a paradise island of incomparable natural beauty, full of unique historical treasures. It lies in the clear blue waters of the Eastern Mediterranean just 40 miles off the coast of Turkey, 60 miles from Syria and 250 miles from Egypt. After Sicily and Sardinia, Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is highly recommended for spending holidays.
